International cricket is brutal. Merit alone rarely guarantees a spot, especially when the big names return. On Sunday afternoon, selectors announced the 15-man squad for July's three-match ODI series in England. The biggest talking point? Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out. It is a decision that caused immediate debate. Just a day ago, the young left-hander smashed a brilliant 110 against Afghanistan in Chennai. Most fans thought that such a sensational century secured his place on the plane. Management had other ideas, choosing defensive safety over raw youth form.
The squeeze at the top of the order
It all comes down to the return of the heavyweights. Virat Kohli is back in the mix after recovering from a nagging hamstring injury he picked up during the IPL 2026 final. His presence changes the entire equation. With captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma locked into the opening slots, the top order has zero vacancies. There is simply no space for a third specialist opener in a tight 15-man touring party. Jaiswal averages over 70 after his first six ODIs, but numbers do not always trump team structure.
Why did selectors choose balance over form?
Management clearly prioritised white-ball experience and utility for English pitches. They wanted safety nets. That is why Ishan Kishan got the nod as a flexible wicketkeeping option, an added left-handed option in the middle order, while Shreyas Iyer keeps his spot to protect against a potential middle-order collapse. Carrying a backup opener who cannot guard the stumps or bat lower down the order is a luxury India decided they could not afford.
