Ashwin defends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma against World Cup doubters

Indian cricket changed in a heartbeat once the side hoisted that T20 trophy. Almost instantly, two giants of the game, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, walked away from the shortest format. Tactical, clever, and necessary. It freed up space for the young guns to make their mark in bilateral series, but the chatter hasn't stopped. Everyone’s now laser-focused on the 50-over game.

Pundits and keyboard warriors? They’re hovering, waiting for a single low score so they can sharpen their knives. It’s relentless. They conveniently ignore years of brilliance, choosing instead to demand a total overhaul every time a senior pro misses out. This noisy, reactionary circus creates real tension inside a dressing room that just needs to get on with the job. Look at that recent clean sweep against Afghanistan. The depth is there. The planning is working. Yet, the clamour to move on doesn't die.

Ravichandran Ashwin is standing firm behind the masters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Ravichandran Ashwin has clearly had enough. He took to his own platform recently, launching a scathing critique of this obsession with 'generational change.' He isn't buying it. Why are we constantly questioning the motives of those who want these legends out? South Africa is coming up. Fast, bouncy pitches. You don't take kids there and expect them to anchor an innings under extreme pressure; you take seasoned, test-hardened masters who have seen it all. That’s the reality. When premier players are forced into a public job interview before every single series, the team chemistry takes a massive hit. It’s distracting.

Ashwin’s message to the BCCI was blunt: stop the guessing games. The selectors need to give these two an ironclad guarantee of their future roles right now. Not next month. Now. Leaving the door open for debate every time a wicket falls is madness. It breeds anxiety where there should be focus. When a player knows exactly where they stand, they can sharpen their training, manage their bodies, and switch off from the external noise. If the board wants a unified squad capable of winning big in 2027, they need to back their biggest assets and tell the critics to pipe down.

"This speculation about Rohit or Virat is not good. In all honesty, where does the speculation come from? Somewhere, it is in someone's mind that they should not go to the World Cup. I don't know who those people are. Some people will have that doubt, and somebody else wants them to be in the squad. I personally think you need experienced batters to play the World Cup in South Africa," Ashwin said in the latest video on his YouTube channel.

"If you want them, make a decision now, and make them feel absolutely comfortable and confident over the next one year. If you do not make the decision now, it becomes difficult as the same thing will keep coming back after every one or two failures," he added.
