The first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore 15 years ago. Brendon McCullum hit an undefeated 158 off 73 balls, including 10 fours and 13 sixes. On the strength of his innings, KKR amassed a huge 222 for the loss of three wickets in 20 overs.
The Knights then bowled the Challengers out for 82 in 15.1 overs. Except for Praveen Kumar (18 off 15), none of the RCB batters reached double figures. Ajit Agarkar was the standout bowler, recording statistics of 4-0-25-3. Even though Ashok Dinda and Sourav Ganguly both took one wicket, Ishant Sharma and Laxmi Ratan Shukla each took one.
Here are some of the unbroken records from the epic IPL 2008 match between RCB and KKR. 140 - The victory by 140 runs remains KKR's largest victory in IPL history. It is also the third-largest win in IPL history, following MI's 146-run victory against Delhi Daredevils in 2017 and RCB's 144-run victory over Gujarat Lions in 2017. Brendon McCullum's 158 not out remains the highest score by a KKR hitter in the IPL's history. Until April 16, he was the only KKR hitter to score an IPL century.
Venkatesh Iyer became the second batter to score a century against MI at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. 140 runs - The 140-run defeat remains RCB's largest in IPL history. It is also one of three occasions that RCB has lost an IPL match by more than 100 runs. Brendon McCullum smashed 13 sixes during his 153-run unbeaten innings. No other KKR hitter has ever broken that mark.
Andre Russell smashed 11 sixes against the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium in 2018. McCullum's 13 sixes are also tied for the second-most in an IPL innings. Chris Gayle smashed 13 sixes against the Delhi Daredevils at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2012.
Gayle has also set the record for the most sixes in an IPL innings (17). 82- RCB's lowest score at home (M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore) is 82. It is also RCB's fifth-lowest IPL score, following 49 (against KKR in 2017), 68 (vs SRH in 2022), 70 (vs CSK in 2019), and 70 (vs RR in 2014).
