There has been a lot of speculation about Mahendra Singh Dhoni's IPL career for the past few years. Dhoni, who bid farewell to international cricket in 2020, is still playing regularly for Chennai Super Kings. However, whether Dhoni will play in the 18th edition to be held in 2025 depends on him.
Chennai Super Kings management has asked the BCCI to reinstate an IPL rule that will allow the franchise to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions.
Even though he has crossed the age of 43, India's all-conquering captain still shines regularly in 22 yards of cricket. There is a buzz in the cricket community about whether Chennai's favorite cricketer Mahi will be able to play in the next season of IPL. However, the yellow jersey holders are determined to keep Dhoni, who has become synonymous with Chennai, in the team.
Chennai has no problem in keeping Dhoni. However, if the 'uncapped player rule', which was in effect from 2008 to 2021, is re-introduced, the benefit is for the franchise. According to that rule, the cricketer has to retire at least five years before to fall in the 'uncapped' category. Then it will cost them less money to retain that player. This rule was also discussed in the meeting between the IPL owners.
Dhoni said goodbye to international cricket in August 2020. As a result, the legendary cricketer will complete five years of retirement in August next year. But he last played an international match in July 2019. As a result, he can be seen on the green carpet of cricket as an 'uncapped player' from the next IPL. If Dhoni has to play within this rule, then Chennai can keep him in the team for just 4 crore rupees.
“There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced," a BCCI source quoted by News18 stated.
Speaking at an event in Hyderabad last month, Dhoni, while talking about his IPL continuation, said, “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,"
