After registering an emphatic win in the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, captain Suryakumar Yadav’s next goal is to win a gold medal in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
During the post-match press conference in Ahmedabad, Suryakumar stated that it has been a great journey over the last month. Although things didn’t go as well as expected at the beginning, in sports such things are bound to happen. He went on to add that the entire campaign was quite special, and the team produced a collective effort to achieve this landmark. He stated that the next target is the Olympic gold.
The International Olympic Committee included Cricket in the Olympic Games for the first time after the 1900 Paris Olympics. During the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, which would be played between 14th July and 29th July, six teams would compete in the men’s and women’s categories.
On the basis of the ICC T20 rankings of both men’s and women’s T20 standings, India is bound to qualify from Asia. Matches would be played at Fairground Stadium, which has been built in Pomona, which is approximately 50 kms from Los Angeles.
The Indian men’s team are the defending champion of the T20 World Cup trophies as well as the Champions Trophy. Suryakumar Yadav stated that the 2024 T20 World Cup win in the West Indies under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma was the biggest turning point.
Suryakumar stated that after the 2024 T20 World Cup win, things changed as the team brought a different kind of approach to how it played. The team understood how it needs to move forward by working together and how to play with a certain kind of approach in the future.
Suryakumar stated that it has been a great journey after that win in 2024. He further added that the team showcased a different style of play during the ICC Champions Trophy, and in 2026, the team was eager to produce something special while performing at home. He further added that the team wants to carry on with the rhythm in 2027, 2028, 2029 and in the years to come by.
