Sri Lanka women produced yet another impressive performance, beating West Indies women by 14 runs in the second ODI on Sunday, 22nd of February at National Cricket Stadium, St George, Grenada. Sri Lanka leads the three-match ODI series 2-0. Sri Lanka won the first ODI by 10 runs at the same venue.
West Indies won the toss and chose to field first. Middle-order batter Vishmi Gunaratne scored 58, while captain Chamari Athapaththu scored 32 while opening the innings. One down batter Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 35 for Sri Lanka.
Right arm off break bowler Karishma Ramharack registered figures of 3/26 for West Indies, while West Indies captain and all-rounder Hayley Matthews registered figures of 2/44 with her clever off break. Leg break bowler Afy Fletcher took 2/40.
West Indies bowler bowled well, but their batters failed to build partnerships regularly. Pacer Jannillea Glasgow scored a vital 50 batting at no 7 while leg break bowler Afy Fletcher scored 20 batting at no 10.
West Indian batters failed to capitalise during the middle overs, while Sri Lankan bowlers were smart enough, especially the spinners, to fox the West Indian batters, with their accurate length and variety. Wicket-keeper batter Shemaine Campbelle and Stefanie Taylor tried to build some rhythm, scoring 30 and 27 respectively, but couldn’t take West Indies home.
Sri Lankan spinners dominate West Indian batters
For Sri Lanka, Sugandika Kumari registered figures of 3/38. The 31-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner flighted the ball well and bowled in the right areas. Veteran Inoka Ranaweera registered figures of 3/44 with her clever left-arm orthodox spin. Ranaweera made the West Indian batters make mistakes and outclassed the batters with her straighter ones and wrist spin.
Sri Lankan spinners didn’t allow the West Indian batters to settle and kept on building the pressure. They bowled well with the old ball and weren’t afraid to pitch the ball up. Sri Lankan spinners produced match winning performance, bowling out the West Indies for 194 in 48 overs, thus winning the second ODI by 14 runs .
