Beth Mooney, the skipper of the Gujarat Giants, has resumed training after leaving the Women's Premier League (WPL) opening game with an injury.

Mooney, who had just returned from Australia's T20 World Cup victory, hobbled off the field after only facing four balls in Gujarat Giants' humiliating 143-run loss to Mumbai Indians on March 4 at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai due to what looked to be a leg injury.

Mooney, who is 29 years old, decided to take on the captaincy of a women's cricket league because she wanted to push herself. The World Cup champion, however, had to skip Gujarat Giants' subsequent game against the UP Warriorz because of this. Sneh Rana, an all-rounder for India, captained the team in Mooney's absence.

Gujarat Giants lost to UP Warriorz by three wickets in an exciting last-over match, handing them their second straight loss. Mooney's former Australia colleague and Gujarat Giants head coach Rachael Haynes informed the commentators during the mid-game interview that the team might have to replace their captain. "I believe Beth Mooney may need to be replaced.

"The scans that were released today didn't look that great," Haynes said. "The medical team will take a look at the scans and they will take the last call." Mooney, who was signed by Gujarat Giants for INR 2 crore, previously admitted that she never considered captaining the team and revealed that India batting legend Mithali Raj, the Giants' mentor, was the one who asked her to lead the team in the WPL.

"I was just happy to be a part of it when I got bid on in the auction, and captaincy wasn't something that was on my radar," Mooney said on the eve of the WPL opener. "Mithali called me and said, 'We'd like you to do it [captaincy], and we're happy if you want to. So please let us know." After a few conversations with Rachael [Haynes, head coach], we both agreed that the time had come for me to challenge myself in cricket." On March 8, the Gujarat Giants will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
