Mahela Jayawardene Praises Suryakumar Yadav's Leadership After World Cup Win

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene recently spoke out to back India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, as the buzz for IPL 2026 starts to build. The Sri Lankan great made it clear that nobody should fret over the batter's recent dips in scoring, describing him as a top-tier player who knows how to find his groove when the pressure hits a boiling point.

Jayawardene pointed out that the middle-order star stays incredibly relaxed about his personal stats, mainly because he cares far more about winning games and keeping the team's spirits high. This cool-headed approach really paid off when the national side needed someone to hold their nerve and grab that trophy on the world stage.

With the Mumbai Indians camp now ramping up for the new season, the coach spoke about how well the skipper handled a dressing room full of big names while keeping everyone pulling in the same direction. Jayawardene admitted that while the right-hander is always looking to be more consistent, his knack for making the tough calls during the World Cup deserves plenty of credit.

The veteran coach feels certain that his star man will head back to domestic duties with a fresh outlook after taking some time away from the international grind.

“SKY is not worried too much about it. He’s a class operator. He’s always going to get there. He has contributed when it mattered," Jayawardene was quoted as saying to PTI on Tuesday.

“Yes, consistency is something that he would want to improve. But I think leading the team the way he led the team and keeping everything together. There were a couple of tough decisions they had to make during the season and in the World Cup, which they did (so) hats off to him. I’m sure he’ll have a good break and join the camp with a smiling face," Jayawardene said.

A Record-Breaking World Cup Campaign

Suryakumar Yadav led India to their third T20 World Cup win in 2026 and batted in all nine games. He finished with 242 runs at 30.25 average and around 136.7 strike rate, ending up one of the top ten run-scorers and India’s second-highest. His best knock came early; an unbeaten 84 from 49 balls against the United States, full of ten fours and four sixes that pulled the side out of trouble and got things moving.

After that, things were quieter: 34 versus the Netherlands, 32 against Pakistan, a quick 33 off thirteen balls versus Zimbabwe, then smaller efforts like 18 against West Indies or South Africa. He struggled a bit in the knockouts with 11 against England in the semi and a duck in the final win over New Zealand. Still, he stayed steady through the group and Super Eights, helped set up that big 96-run victory in Ahmedabad, and left his mark as captain even if the really big hits were mostly limited to that opening game.
