India's fielding woes threaten their T20 World Cup campaign as Morkel speaks out ahead of a must-win semi-final clash against England.

India's Bowling Coach Breaks Silence On The One Problem That Could Derail Their World Cup Dream

Morne Morkel, India's bowling coach, recently spoke out about the team's ongoing fielding problems at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He admitted that repeated mistakes in the field have cost the team 15 to 20 extra runs per innings. Morkel shared this honest view before Thursday's big semi-final against England. The match takes place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India must play at their best to keep their title.

India's fielding statistics tell a poor story. India have a catching efficiency of only 71.7 per cent. This is the worst record of any team in the Super 8 stage. They have dropped 13 catches so far. This is more than any other country in the tournament. These stats put the defending champions under a lot of pressure before the knockout rounds. In these big games, one dropped ball often decides the whole match.

India's Fielding Crisis Casts Shadow Over T20 World Cup Semi-Final Bid

The cracks really showed during India's game against the West Indies at Eden Gardens. Abhishek Sharma dropped an easy catch at extra cover in the fifth over. This happened during Jasprit Bumrah’s spell and let Roston Chase stay at the crease. Later, in the second-to-last over from Arshdeep Singh, Sharma missed another big chance. He could have dismissed the dangerous Rovman Powell. These moments showed how shaky India looks under pressure.

Morkel is choosing to look ahead to Thursday's game instead of looking back. He said the coaching staff works on fielding standards every day. He believes that putting the right players in the right spots will bring the results they need. His calm tone seems like an attempt to keep the team steady while fans and media turn up the heat.

"Obviously, fielding is something that we speak about a lot. I think at times we're guilty; we're giving away maybe 15-20 runs in the field. That's one aspect that we keep on working on and asking the guys to really step up on. If we can get the right players in those positions, hopefully we can take the catches," Morkel said at the pre-match press conference.

England have won the T20 World Cup twice and will be a tough opponent. They will definitely try to take advantage of any Indian mistakes. Wankhede Stadium is a great place for this match. It should be a close fight. India's weak fielding gives England a real reason to feel confident about reaching the final.
