India grabbed the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy on home soil, beating New Zealand in a final that had fans on edge from the very first ball. Suryakumar Yadav kept his cool as captain throughout a tournament that pushed the team to the limit in every department.

New Zealand were nowhere close to India in the final, and India stayed steady when the pressure hit. This win marked the first time since 2011 that India had taken a World Cup on their own turf. It finally closed the door on over ten years of close calls and tough losses for two different generations of players. For the Indian team, this win meant a lot more than just adding another trophy to the cabinet.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir had dealt with heavy heat from critics after losing the home Test series to New Zealand and South Africa earlier in his run. He didn't hold back at the post-match press conference. Instead of arguing every point, he made it clear whose opinion actually matters to him. "I am not accountable to social media. I am accountable to 30 people in the dressing room," Gambhir said. His words hit home, as they came from a man who ignored the outside chaos to keep his team on track.

Gambhir also talked about what it felt like to win a home World Cup twice, first as the hero on the field in 2011, and now as the man calling the shots from the bench. He made it clear that hard work as a group won this tournament. He insisted that no one in that room thinks they just "deserve" the India jersey. Under his leadership, every single game, whether it's a small bilateral series or a massive ICC final, comes with the exact same high expectations.

"You have to turn up every day. It doesn't matter whether it is a bilateral, ICC or any other match. All in the dressing room are privileged to get that chance. We can never take that for granted when you wear this jersey," he said.
