All-rounder Amelia Kerr’s impressive performance helped New Zealand women outclass Zimbabwe Women in the second ODI that was played at University Oval, Dunedin, on Saturday, the 7th of March. The 25-year-old leg break bowler registered figures of 7/34 to destroy Zimbabwe’s batting line-up. The win helped New Zealand win the three-match ODI series 2-0. The White Ferns won the toss and chose to field first.
Zimbabwean batters never looked settled while facing the New Zealand bowling line up, except opener Modester Mupachikwa, who was the highest scorer with 32. Another opener, Kelis Ndhovlu, was retired hurt after putting up a 25-run partnership alongside Mupachikwa for the opening wicket.
Zimbabwean pacers Audrey Mazvishaya and Tendai Makusha scored 13 and 12, respectively, batting at no 9 and 10. Amelia bowled a tight length and looked accurate with her line. The 25-year-old built pressure on the Zimbabwean batters by claiming wickets regularly.
Zimbabwe were bowled out for 102 in 29.1 overs. Pacer Molly Penfold registered figures of 3/17 for New Zealand women. Amelia Kerr was the standout performer for New Zealand as a bowler as well as a batter. The 25-year-old scored 45 in 40 balls, hitting 6 fours and 1 six, opening the inning while chasing the target. Isabelle Gaze scored 20 while one down batter Madeline Green scored an unbeaten 27.
New Zealand chased the target in 16.2 overs, winning the match by 8 wickets. New Zealand women’s win in the second ODI showcased the ‘White Ferns’ domination in the recently concluded three-match T20I as well as in the ongoing three-match ODI series.
The third ODI will be played at the same venue on Wednesday, the 11th of March. New Zealand women would be looking to end the series on a high by winning the third ODI, while Zimbabwe women will be hoping to put up a fight by gaining a consolation win.
