When will MS Dhoni be back for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026?

Chennai Super Kings have one of the most famous reputations in IPL history, five titles, an incredibly loyal fanbase, and a leadership style known for staying cool under pressure. But IPL 2026 has started with nothing but trouble. After losing their first three games to Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, CSK are stuck at the bottom of the table. Ruturaj Gaikwad is in charge, but the team look disjointed and lack the steady hand they’ve had in the past. With two key players still out with injuries, the home fans at Chepauk are getting restless for a win.

Every IPL season, everyone starts asking the same thing: Is this finally Dhoni's last year? But in 2026, the conversation changed. It’s no longer about when he’ll retire; it’s about when he’ll actually be back on the field.

Dhoni strained his calf during training on March 22, and CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed he’d be out for about two weeks. That timeline technically ended around April 5 or 6, but recovery for a 44-year-old usually doesn't go exactly to plan. He missed all three of CSK's matches so far and didn't even travel for the away games. For a team that rely so much on his presence behind the stumps, his absence has been obvious, affecting both their tactics and the general mood of the dugout.

Recently, things have started looking up. Reports show Dhoni has been batting a lot in the nets at Chepauk without any obvious pain. He’s had long sessions at the MAC B ground and the main stadium, hitting his signature sixes and looking sharp. Photos and videos of these sessions went viral, giving a worried fanbase some much-needed hope.

According to a report from the Indian Express, Dhoni will likely have a final fitness test in the next 48 hours. If he passes, he could play against the Delhi Capitals on April 11 at Chepauk. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was careful but honest at the toss before the RCB match, saying, "MS is getting back slowly; sometimes it takes time. If he's ready to play, it'll be soon."

Dhoni has played 278 IPL matches, the most ever, scoring 5,439 runs with a strike rate of 137.45. Even now, those stats are impressive. Aside from his batting and keeping, his experience is exactly what the team are missing when the pressure is on in the final overs. CSK desperately need a win, and everyone knows that having Dhoni back, even for a little bit, completely changes the game for them.
