An attempt by US president Donald Trump to appeal to the Indian public backfired after he mispronounced the name of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Trump arrived in India on Monday for a two-day tour, where he was greeted by a crowd of more than 100,000 at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad.
As one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Tendulkar is worshipped in the cricket-mad country. He finished his career as the highest run-scorer in the history of test and one-day international cricket. And despite being retired since 2013, he remains one of India's most famous athletes worldwide.
After referencing India's achievements in film and pop culture during his speech Trump moved on to the country's cricketing heroes, which is where he tripped up.
Despite saying "Suuchin" instead of Sachin, it was close enough to be met by cheers by the massive crowd.
But that didn't stop observers on Twitter from taking Trump to task over the faux pas.
"It took me a full 30 seconds to work out whose name Trump was trying to say here and then I fell off my chair," one user wrote.
Another said: "I know very little about cricket but even I know how to pronounce Sachin Tendulkar... what a disgrace. He is so culturally arrogant he doesn't even bother to learn the correct pronunciation."
And apparently Tendulkar's name wasn't the only word he mispronounced.
The rally coincided with the official reopening Motera Stadium which, with a capacity of 110,000, is now the largest cricket stadium in the world.
