The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was elated as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat the Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in their big IPL 2026 matchup on Sunday. RCB put up a massive 250/3, thanks to a huge 99-run partnership between Tim David and Rajat Patidar that CSK just couldn't stop.
Even though Chennai chose to bowl first, their bowlers couldn't find a way to slow down David, who smashed 70 runs off only 25 balls. Virat Kohli got the innings moving early with a quick 28 off 18, hitting two fours and a six before being caught off Anshul Kamboj in the fifth over.
It was another solid outing for Kohli, coming right after his 69 not out against Sunrisers Hyderabad, proving he’s in great touch this season. While Sarfaraz Khan kept Chennai in the hunt with a fast half-century, the target was just too high, especially after Bhuvneshwar Kumar tore through the middle order with a sensational three-wicket spell.
It was also a huge night for Kohli personally, as he broke one of Rohit Sharma’s major records. Rohit previously held the record for the most runs against a single opponent, with 1,161 runs in 36 games against KKR.
Kohli only needed two runs to break that record going into this game, and he did it in the very first over. Now, he's at the top of the list with 1,174 runs against CSK in 35 innings. It’s just more proof of how consistently he performs against the best teams, moving him ahead of other stars like David Warner, who has 1,134 runs against the Punjab Kings.
Virat Kohli will be looking to make amends for the lost opportunity in this game when RCB take on the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on April 10. The Rajat Patidar-led side are one of the most dangerous batting lineups in this season's IPL, given how they have fared in the first two matches.
