Former West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle remembered Virat Kohli's incredible gesture during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in 2011. Gayle got his first IPL century with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in his first season. He has smashed a record six centuries in the IPL, the most in the league's existence.
Gayle disclosed to former RCB teammate AB de Villiers in an episode of IPL Bold Diaries that it was Kohli who assisted him in scoring his century during his rookie season with RCB. Gayle, dubbed "The Universal Boss," stated that when he was batting on 98, the former RCB captain blocked a few balls for him to help him achieve the three-figure mark.
"When I was on 98 in the first match, Virat Kohli kept blocking a few balls so I could get to my first IPL hundred," Gayle said. The incident occurred during RCB's encounter against Gayle's first IPL franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders. (KKR). Chris Gayle can be seen batting on 98 in a social media clip, with RCB requiring only two runs from 14 balls.
Kohli, who was batting alongside Gayle, was seen blocking some balls to guarantee his teammate hit a century. Gayle smashed a boundary in the first delivery of the 18th over, giving RCB a nine-wicket victory over KKR. Gayle spent two years with KKR and had an ordinary season. He was also dropped from the West Indies squad.
When his prospects appeared to be bleak, RCB named him as a replacement for the injured Dirk Nannes. He disclosed that when he first joined RCB, the energy and vibe were different. Gayle has 3163 runs for RCB, making him the most influential player in the franchise's history. He is the highest run-scorer in IPL annals, with 4965 runs scored from 141 innings at an average of 39.72.
