IPL 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad sign David Payne as a replacement for the injured Jack Edwards

Sunrisers Hyderabad has signed England left-arm pacer in place of the 25-year-old all-rounder Jack Edwards, who will not be available due to a foot injury. Payne has been signed for a sum of INR 1.5 crore by SRH.

The left-arm pacer has so far played just one ODI for the Three Lions in his career. He made his debut for England against the Netherlands in 2022 and claimed one wicket in that match. He made his debut in the County Championship way back in April 2011, but injury issues affected his progress.

He produced some impressive performances at the County circuit. Due to constant injury concerns, he quit first-class cricket and concentrated on the shorter format.

Experienced campaigner in the T20 format

Payne has played in 233 T20S so far, claiming 304 wickets at an average of 21.16 and an economy rate of 8.03.

Payne is vastly experienced when it comes to bowling in the T20 format. Payne possesses variety in his bowling that makes him difficult to read during the run of play.

The left-arm pacer claimed 33 wickets for Gloucestershire in the Vitality Blast T20 in 2024 and was the highest wicket-taker for his team in that season. He also represented Welsh Fire in The Hundred Competition.

He was part of the Desert Vipers team for two seasons in the ILT20. The 35-year-old also played for Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League. He registered impressive figures of 3/18 for Perth Scorchers in the final of the 2025/26 BBL against Sydney Sixers, helping Perth Scorchers win their 6th BBL trophy.
