India Women vs Sri Lanka Women T20I Series: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The series will begin on December 21st and conclude on December 30th. Harmanpreet Kaur will captain the team, while Smriti Mandhana will be the vice-captain.
Richa Ghosh and G Kamalini have been included as wicketkeepers. The bowling attack features experienced players like Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, and Sneh Rana. It's worth noting that this will be the Indian women's team's first tournament since winning the recent ODI World Cup, where they defeated South Africa in the final.
Indian team has included two new faces. Gunanidhi Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma have been selected for the Indian women's T20 team for the first time. Kamalini and Vaishnavi have replaced Radha Yadav and Uma Chetry in the squad. Radha and Uma were part of the Indian team for the Women's ODI World Cup.
As for Vaishnavi Sharma, she took the most wickets in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy while playing for Madhya Pradesh. She claimed 21 wickets in 11 matches.
Shafali Verma has been included in the T20 squad, replacing Pratika Rawal, who was part of the team for the knockout matches of the ODI World Cup 2025. Verma has also impressed with her strong performances in domestic cricket.
The first two matches of the T20 series will be played in Visakhapatnam. The remaining three matches will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. The Women's T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in February-March next year, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Therefore, this series will be crucial for India. The performance of the players in the Sri Lanka series will likely determine the team's composition for the World Cup.
The series announcement came after the postponement of India's scheduled white-ball series against Bangladesh in December. The most recent T20I encounter between India and Sri Lanka took place during the World Cup in October 2024.
