On Off 12:50PM Good afternoon and welcome
England has one World Cup to its name in 2019, but that cricket-inspired euphoria has already been washed away by the warm, mid-summer rains, along with England's feeble Ashes exposition. Eddie Jones' England will know that they have an opportunity to reinvigorate a nation, and that could start with a win today against Warren Gatland's Grand Slam heroes.
It is a big ask. Wales are almost at full strength and are safe in the knowledge that, thanks to Australia's All-Black thrashing yesterday, either a draw or a win would see them officially ranked as the number team in world rugby, tomorrow. They are favourites with the bookmakers, too; a rarity for a home nations side at Twickenham.
That might have something to do with Jones' selection. He named an experimental squad on Thursday morning - largely second-or-third choice players dotted with cast-iron starters - but since then things have changed. Sam Underhill, Henry Slade and Ruaridh McConnochie were all due to start today - the latter on debut - but they have all been ruled out with injuries. Joe Cokanasiga, Jonathan Joseph and Lewis Ludlam fill those gaps, while Courtney Lawes and Manu Tuilagi come onto the bench.
Jones will reveal his squad at 1pm tomorrow. Do any of the "possibles" featuring today have enough time to barge their way in? If they are able to defeat a Wales team that is missing just two players from their Grand Slam victory in Cardiff, then there is every chance.
Most cannot look past a comfortable Wales victory and, while the teams meet again in Cardiff next Saturday, anything other than that for Wales would surely take the tinge of an expected surge to the top of the world rankings. For all the pride which that will bring, they would much prefer to be the number one team in the world on Saturday 2 November in Japan.
