Ben Duckett Quit IPL 2026 To Save His Test Career

England opener Ben Duckett walked away from IPL 2026 just four days before the tournament starts on 28 March. He turned down his Delhi Capitals contract and accepted a potential two-year ban from the BCCI. Delhi Capitals signed him for INR 2 crore at the auction. The franchise must now find a replacement.

Why did Ben Duckett step back from IPL 2026?

A difficult winter forced Duckett’s hand. He managed only 202 runs across ten Ashes innings during England's 4–1 defeat in Australia. He then spent the entire T20 World Cup on the bench. Since the start of The Hundred last August, he has recorded just one half-century in 28 innings across all formats. This poor run of form made an immediate trip to India feel counterproductive.

Duckett told The Telegraph that he could not rush into a Test summer without processing these difficult months. He plans to work with Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores and return to basics at Trent Bridge.

The ban and the broader consequences

Duckett will now face a two-season suspension because he withdrew after the auction without a medical reason. This rule locks him out of IPL auctions until 2029. At 31, that window may never truly reopen, and Duckett acknowledged this fact. He admitted he might be leaving the IPL without ever playing a single match.

His teammate Harry Brook faced similar consequences after pulling out of a Delhi Capitals deal last year. Duckett made this decision knowing exactly what it would cost him financially.

What comes next for the England opener?

Duckett returns to Nottinghamshire for the early County Championship season. He wants to find the red-ball rhythm that made him a trusted opener during the drawn Test series against India last summer. England face New Zealand in a home Test series starting on 4 June.

Duckett intends to start that series in peak condition. His choice shows he is prioritising a long Test career over the IPL 2026 match fees. Many cricket traditionalists will likely admire his stance.
