BCCI sets the record straight as Rohit and Kohli choose Vijay Hazare duty on their own

This year brought many ups and downs for Indian cricket. At the beginning of the year, the BCCI made it clear that all centrally contracted players would have to play domestic cricket whenever they got the opportunity.

No matter how big a player they were, it was mandatory to play for their state. Under this rule, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli each played one match in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy. A few months later, both retired from red-ball cricket, raising questions about whether they would play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

For a long time, there was debate about whether the BCCI would pressure them again. But late on December 2nd, it became clear that Rohit would play for Mumbai and Kohli for Delhi. As soon as this news broke, many assumed the board had forced them. Reports also stated that Rohit had wanted to play from the beginning, but Kohli had been less interested.

But according to a report by News18 CricketNext, no pressure was exerted by the BCCI. The Delhi and Districts Cricket Association confirmed that Kohli was available, but it is now clear that he made the decision himself.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play the Vijay Hazare Trophy

According to a top BCCI official, both senior players voluntarily expressed their desire to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. They believe that playing domestic cricket will keep them match-fit, which is essential for upcoming international tours.

“Nobody has forced them to return to the domestic circuit. Both Rohit and Kohli have made themselves available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy on their own accord,” a top BCCI official said.

The biggest question now is how many matches they will play. The tournament begins on December 24th, and the India vs. New Zealand ODI series is scheduled to begin on January 11th. It is believed that both could play a large portion of the group stage. However, reports suggest that Kohli will play only three of Delhi's seven league matches.

When players like Rohit and Kohli decide to play domestic cricket, it sends a positive message for the sport itself. This boosts the morale of young players and highlights the importance of domestic cricket. Indeed, they weren't forced, and it's also good that they decided to step up and play.
