Jay Shah Elected Unopposed New Chairman of ICC: Jay Shah is the new chairman of ICC. Tuesday, August 27, was the last day to submit nominations. None other than Shah nominated. As a result, he won unopposed. Shah's name has been announced by ICC. Shah is the youngest chairman in the history of world cricket. He got this responsibility at the age of 35.
Shah's tenure will commence on December 1, 2024, succeeding the current Chair, Greg Barclay, who opted not to pursue a third term.
Four people from India have been the chairman of the ICC before. Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar went from BCCI to ICC. Shah is the fifth chairman. He will take the new responsibility from December 1 this year.
Election and Transition
The ICC announced that elections for the chairman position would only occur if multiple candidates were nominated. With Jay Shah being the sole nominee, the election process was straightforward. Shah's unopposed election signifies a smooth transition of leadership from the outgoing chairman, Greg Barclay, who chose not to seek a third term.
Greg Barclay did not want to be the chairman of the ICC for the third time. His term ends in November. There has been speculation for a long time about who will be the next chairman. Shah was running ahead. That was the seal. He will hold this position for the next 6 years. After Indian cricket, this time Shah is at the top of world cricket.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated.
“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
In September 2025, Shah's tenure as the BCCI secretary would have ended for the second time. Following the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, he had to undergo a cooling-off period of three years after that. There is no bar in his becoming the ICC chairman during this period. Shah can hold the post of ICC chairman twice in three years, i.e. for a total of six years. If he wants, he can return to the administration of the Indian Cricket Board after three years.
Shah was not limited to just BCCI. He was appointed the chairman of the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) in January 2021. In view of his leadership skills, Shah was once again entrusted with this responsibility in January this year. Shah to head ICC's powerful finance and commercial affairs sub-committee in November 2022.
