On Sunday, the BCCI is set to reveal the roster for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Several sources said that senior hitters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have agreed to play the shortest format. The two batsmen last faced each other in a T20I in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, which India lost to England. Both Kohli and Rohit were in fantastic form in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and many cricket pundits and fans want them to play in this year's T20 World Cup because their experience will be essential for India in the West Indies and the United States.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are scheduled to miss the Afghanistan T20Is while they heal from injury.

Suryakumar, who has led India in the last two T20I series, injured his ankle while fielding in the third T20I against South Africa.

The 33-year-old twisted his ankle, which may be a tear that will require more than a month to heal.

"Surya has reported to NCA for rehab work, and the Medical Science team has ruled him injured for the time being." He will be unable to participate against Afghanistan, which begins in three weeks. Since he is unlikely to be selected for Tests, he may play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in February to test his fitness before playing in the IPL, according to a BCCI source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

In the absence of Hardik Pandya, who is also expected to miss the series, Surya led the side. The Indian all-rounder is still rehabilitating from an ankle injury suffered during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

"There is no update on Hardik's fitness status as of now and one can say there remains a big question mark of him being available before the end of IPL," a source said.

On Sunday, January 7, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named a roster for the forthcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. Star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are back in the T20I squad after a 14-month absence, hinting at their potential inclusion in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Both Rohit and Virat last played a T20I when India lost to England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. Kohli was India's highest run-scorer in the previous T20 World Cup and Asia Cup competitions, but he did not play in the shortest format last year.

Suryakumar Yadav, who led India in the last two T20Is against Australia and South Africa, will miss the Afghanistan series owing to an ankle injury sustained in the third T20I in Johannesburg.
