South Africa batter Sarel Erwee said that he was almost on the verge of quitting cricket two years ago due to issues in his personal life. The 32-year-old said that he was finding it extremely tough to focus on the game as he wasn't in the proper mindset and was having mental health struggles to a large extent.

"It had nothing to do with my stats or feeling I was never going to play for South Africa. It was a case of what was going on in my personal life, away from the cricket field, that was influencing my energies and mindset," Erwee was quoted as saying.

The Natal-born Erwee mentioned that slowly, but steadily, he was starting to dislike cricket amidst his personal issues.

"I made the decision one day that I love my job, but I'm going to absolutely hate it if I don't sort out my personal issues," he stated.

Erwee is now set to take part in the Proteas' three-match Test against Ben Stokes's England. Prior to the first Test, which is scheduled to get underway on July 17 at Lord's, Erwee said that he would go through his notes before facing the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

"I'm actually getting my book out here to give you some inside info," Erwee added.

Erwee made his Test debut earlier this year against New Zealand in Christchurch. Two months later, he played his 100th first-class match when South Africa locked horns with Bangladesh at Gqeberha.

Earlier this week, Erwee also scored 42 and 14 in South Africa's warm-up match against England Lions at St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury.
