England have opted for an internal appointment to replace Trevor Bayliss as head coach by promoting Chris Silverwood.
The 44-year-old former Yorkshire and Middlesex seamer, who won six caps for England and took 577 first-class wickets, became England bowling coach in 2017, having led Essex to an unexpected County Championship triumph.
He will begin his new role immediately and lead the team on the tour to New Zealand that starts next month.
Silverwood has not been appointed on a fixed-term contract but as a full-time ECB employee. He will be paid about £500,000 a year, the same as Bayliss, plus performance bonuses.
Ashley Giles, the managing director of England cricket, described him as the "outstanding candidate" after he had been chosen ahead of other coaches...
