NAGPUR: Experienced city skating coach Pravin Deshpande received the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati award for best coach in a function held recently at Mumbai. Deshpande, who got the award for his achievements in 2014-15, had performed well as a professional skater in the last couple of decades.
He started skating in 1983 at turned professional in 1989. He represented India in several international skating competitions including Hong Kong (1991), Japan (1995), South Korea (1997) and China (1999). He was the captain of the Indian side at Worlds France in 2001.
After hanging his boots as a player, he concentrated on coaching. He had accompanied the Indian skating team as a coach in various Asian, World and European tournaments in the last eight years.
A four-time national and 12-time state champion, Deshpande has been running successful Prowins Skating Academy branches at Nagpur, Mumbai and Pune. In the last few years he has produced several international skaters including Nikhilesh Tabhane and Piyush Akre. Both his trainees Tabhane and Akre also received Shiv Chattrapati awards as players.
Tabhane was winner of two medals at the Asian Skating Championship. He was also the fastest skater of the country and broke records for more than ten times to win gold medals in the National Championships. Another Deshpande’s trainee Piyush Akre of Nagpur has also brought laurels to the region on many occasions. Piyush represented India and won many medals at the Nationals.
Other national champions produced by Pravin Deshpande include Rohit Deshpande, Nishant Deshpande, Ritu Kapai, Amit Pande, Bobby Sharma, Mihir Kanade, Tejas Deoskar, Shraddha Ramekar, Prafull Ajagia, Madhulika Joshi and Yashraj Anandpawar.
Pravin gives credit of his success to his parents, wife, coaches, Baba Deshpande, SAM and RSFI.
