Several city shuttlers started their campaign on a winning note in the 42nd Indian Masters (Veteran) National Badminton Championships at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

NAGPUR: Several city shuttlers started their campaign on a winning note in the 42nd Indian Masters (Veteran) National Badminton Championships at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

Ajay Dayal had a perfect day and won two rounds on Monday in the 35 plus men’s singles qualification. Dayal ousted Bhabesh Kumar Seth 15-8, 15-6. Later in the day, Dayal made the light work of ML Samraj Varma 15-9, 15-3 in just 11 minutes.

An employee of Railways, Dayal will face Prashant Bahatre of Thane in the final qualification round of the U-35 men’s singles first round.

Dayal and Amit Deshpande (Nashik) will play Jaswant S Singh and Sarvjeet Singh in the 35 plus men’s doubles.

In the 60 olus men’s singles, Sharad Mahajan outclassed Jogesh Samanta 15-10, 15-5 in 15 minutes. He will meet Hariom Kumar Mittal in the second and last qualifying round.

In 50 plus singles, Arvind Joshi trounced Sharad Pathak 10-15, 15-9, 15-10 in 27 minutes. Joshi will now face Pavan Kumar Agarwal in the second qualifier. In the doubles, Arvind Joshi and Ajay Thatte edged out Sanni Babu Ramba-Arvinder Singh 15-11, 9-15, 13-15.

Gurdeep Singh Arora will face Rajeev Kumar Singh in the 45 plus singles. In the 45 plus doubles, Gurdeep Singh Arora and Manish Bhati rallied back to defeat Khalid Basha Mangad Lathif-SK Sreekantha 15-17, 15-10, 15-7 in half an hour.

Gurdeep-Rajeev will meet Edwin Cortez and Edwin De Menezes in the second round. Kiran Makode will face Shekhar Prashant Sharma in the first round.
