Arora, Dayal, Mahajan, Kharabe move up in veteran badminton nationals
Gurdeep Singh Arora, Ajay Dayal, Sharad Mahajan and Rajendra Kharabad moved up in their respective categories on the third day of the 42nd Indian Masters (Veteran) National Badminton Championships 2017-18 at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

NAGPUR: Gurdeep Singh Arora, Ajay Dayal, Sharad Mahajan and Rajendra Kharabad moved up in their respective categories on the third day of the 42nd Indian Masters (Veteran) National Badminton Championships 2017-18 at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.
Gurdeep Arora outclassed Sungjemmenba Longkumer 21-5, 21-4 quite easily in the 45 plus men’s singles. In the second round, Gurdeep Arora will clash with fourth seed R Sivaprakash. Gurdeep and Manish Bhati will take on Mumbai’s Vilas Kuvale and Yogesh Padukone in the 45 plus men's doubles.
Earlier in the final qualifying round, Gurdeep Arora and Manish Bhati trounced Edwin Cortez and Edwin De Menezes 15-9, 15-4 to make the cut for the main draw. In the second and final qualifying round of 35 plus men’s doubles, Ajay Dayal and Amit Deshpande (Nashik) rallied back superbly to oust Vikrant Karanjkar and Swapnil Malpathak 13-15, 15-11, 15-13.
However in the singles, Ajay Dayal went down against his Railways counterpart Prashant Bahatre of Thane 11-15, 10-15. In the 60 plus singles, qualifier Sharad Mahajan beat Kusum Bachan Yenugutala. Rajendra Kharabe and Rajeev Shukla will lock horns with Ram Lakhan and Arun Mahajan.
In the 55 plus men's singles, Rajendra Kharabe of AG Nagpur will take on sixth seed Anupam Kumaria. Hundreds of participants from all over the country are participating in the annual tournament. The finals of various categories will be held on Saturday.
